Whiplash

whiplash2Whiplash is a topic very dear to me.  My Mom was in a car accident when I was in high school. She was rear-ended by a drunk driver. There was no warning – he slammed into her going 80 mph. It was the beginning of a very long 4 years of suffering from neck and back pain which evolved to sciatica (pain, numbness and tingling down her leg ). She was consulting traditional medical professionals but the pain medications never solved the problem. No one suggested a chiropractor. She decided to go after listening to a chiropractor speak at a health fair. From his talk on sciatica, she decided it was time to try a non-traditional approach. She found a chiropractor, and it was the first time she had relief from back and leg pain. It made such an impact on me that I decided that this was my destiny – to prevent other families from having to suffer needlessly like Mom.

The most common cause of whiplash is from a car accident. One of the worst impacts is when you are completely stopped and out of nowhere, are rear-ended. Even if you are wearing a seat belt, you can have a whiplash injury. The seat belt will protect you from being catapulted out of the vehicle and could save your life. It does not prevent your spine from going through the sudden whipping motion that takes place upon impact.
Children can also be impacted from whiplash. The symptoms may present differently such as irritability, difficulty sleeping, bed wetting, change in focus, fear of getting in a car, and all the symptoms an adult can have.

Common symptoms of whiplash are headaches, neck pain,  numbness and tingling in the arms and legs, dizziness, visual disturbances , jaw pain, ringing in the ears(tinnitus), and back pain.

Chiropractors specialize in soft tissue injuries such as whiplash. It is ideal to be evaluated soon after the injury.
