‘Tis the season for hearing Jingle Bells and all your favorite Christmas carols. However, if you are hearing ringing in your ears after the music has stopped, you may have tinnitus.
Tinnitus is the fancy term for “ringing” in your ears. It is the perception of hearing sounds when there are no acoustic sounds in the room. It can drive people crazy- literally. There are many potential causes for tinnitus. One of the causes can be a misalignment in the upper cervical area of the neck interrupting proper nerve flow. We refer to this as a subluxation. A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine which interferes with the nerve function in between the vertebra. A subluxation is the result of spinal bones with improper motion affecting nerve communication between your brain and your body.
A Chiropractor is trained to detect misalignments or subluxations in the spine resulting in nerve pressure. We correct the subluxation by making specific adjustments to vertebrae.
Ring in the New Year by ending the ringing in your ears !
Whiplash is a topic very dear to me. My Mom was in a car accident when I was in high school. She was rear-ended by a drunk driver. There was no warning – he slammed into her going 80 mph. It was the beginning of a very long 4 years of suffering from neck and back pain which evolved to sciatica (pain, numbness and tingling down her leg ). She was consulting traditional medical professionals but the pain medications never solved the problem. No one suggested a chiropractor. She decided to go after listening to a chiropractor speak at a health fair. From his talk on sciatica, she decided it was time to try a non-traditional approach. She found a chiropractor, and it was the first time she had relief from back and leg pain. It made such an impact on me that I decided that this was my destiny – to prevent other families from having to suffer needlessly like Mom.
The most common cause of whiplash is from a car accident. One of the worst impacts is when you are completely stopped and out of nowhere, are rear-ended. Even if you are wearing a seat belt, you can have a whiplash injury. The seat belt will protect you from being catapulted out of the vehicle and could save your life. It does not prevent your spine from going through the sudden whipping motion that takes place upon impact.
Children can also be impacted from whiplash. The symptoms may present differently such as irritability, difficulty sleeping, bed wetting, change in focus, fear of getting in a car, and all the symptoms an adult can have.
Common symptoms of whiplash are headaches, neck pain, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs, dizziness, visual disturbances , jaw pain, ringing in the ears(tinnitus), and back pain.
Chiropractors specialize in soft tissue injuries such as whiplash. It is ideal to be evaluated soon after the injury.

“To prescribe an opiate for pain without also prescribing a treatment plan for the cause of that pain is a prescription plan for disaster.”
~Deborah A. Fudge, D.C.~
College can be one of the most exciting and also most stressful times in a person’s life. The independence can be freeing but also stressful. The challenges of juggling classes, working, roommates, lack of sleep, and all the other physical, emotional and toxic stresses can take its toll on the body. Staying focused doing hours of homework is difficult enough for a non-distracted person. If you add headaches, neck and back pain due to spinal subluxations it can be even more difficult to stay focused and study.
We are seeing an epidemic in overdoses due to opiates. Some of the problems start with a prescription for pain relief. The last thing we need is to see a rise in opiate use. Chiropractic is a safe, 100% natural, drug-free approach to your health.
I am happy to help any college student with chiropractic care. Some of the local colleges include Northern Essex Community College, Cambridge College, Southern New Hampshire University and Merrimack College. I am a provider for most of the major insurance companies. I have been in practice for 29 years and love helping people of all ages. Optimizing your health is my goal.
If you have ever had sciatica, you can attest as to how tough it is to function when your leg is screaming at you. Many people suffer for years trying to find answers to the cause.
Sciatica means pain down the leg. It is caused from pressure on the sciatica nerve. The sciatica nerve is made up of nerve roots in the lower back. They come together in the sciatica notch located in
the center of your gluteal (butt ) muscle. Hence, why it truly is a pain in the butt! Common symptoms associated with sciatica include pain, burning, numbness, tingling, dead, weakness in the muscles of the leg. It typically is in one leg only.Causes of sciatica include subluxation or misalignment of the lumbar spine and or pelvis, herniated lumbar disc. pregnancy spinal stenosis, piriformis muscle spasm, and on rare occasions, tumor.
When you call and make an appointment, plan on an hour appointment.
I will take a detailed case history, perform neurological, orthopedic, and chiropractic tests during my evaluation of your spine and if necessary take x-rays. I will let you know if I can help you or if I need to refer you to someone who can. Either way you will have an answer.
There are times when an MRI is necessary. Depending on your insurance will determine if I can make the appointment for you directly.
Knowledge is power. Let’s get to the bottom as to what is causing your pain in the leg!
The top athletes and professionals throughout the world use chiropractic care to improve their health and overall performance. From youth, high school & college to professional, athletes put much more stress on their body which naturally creates more strain on their spine.
Athletes across all sports see an improved performance after getting adjusted by a chiropractor. A misaligned spine can not only give you back and neck pain, it can put uneven stress on your extremities such as your ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows and wrists. These are all parts of your body that need to be in tip top shape when performing at the highest level.
Chiropractic has always been drug-free and 100% natural. Whether you are preparing for a marathon or want to be the best in your golf league, chiropractic plays a big role in your health care team.

You may be one of the 35-40 million Americans suffering from seasonal allergies. The Kleenex box is always within your reach. Between the stuffy nose, runny nose, coughing and sneezy it is a miracle if you can get through the day without antihistamines. And let’s not forget about trying to sleep! Many resort to a barrage of over the counter drugs to combat the symptoms but they do not treat the cause.
A strong immune system is still one of the best defenses against allergies, infections and the countless other diseases that we encounter on a daily basis.
This is because our immune system, when healthy, is designed to recognize and attack pollutants such as pollen, bacteria, and other allergens as they enter the body.
So what weakens our natural ability to fight off these pesky allergens?
Unfortunately, there are many forces that can weaken this innate ability, which include poor diet, lack of exercise and the prolonged exposure to stress and physical pain.
How does chiropractic fit in to this equation?
This is achieved through reducing stress on the nervous system. Chiropractic locates areas in the spine under higher stress due to misalignment of the vertebrae and pressure on the nerve. This is called a subluxation. Taking the pressure off the nerve allows the nervous system to communicate with the body. This allows the immune system to function more efficiently. Recent research has demonstrated a distinct relationship between the nervous system and the immune system that entails the nervous system “tipping off’ white blood cells about the presence of all forms of bodily invaders.
And you thought all we did was “crack backs”!
Ramp up your immunity by ramping up your nervous system with a drug-free and natural approach. The other alternative must be getting old by now.

Pop quiz: Are you currently reading this while hunched over your phone? If so, here’s a very scary wakeup call: Looking down at your phone can force up to 60 pounds of weight on your spine, according to a new study in the journal Surgical Technology International.
Most people spend an average of two to four hours a day slumped over their smartphones, according to the study, and that awkward position isn’t doing any favors for your neck and back.
The adult head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds, so when you’re standing upright with perfect posture, that’s the amount of stress that’s on your spine. According to the new research, tilting your head forward increases the amount of stress—and therefore weight—on your spine. When you tilt just 15 degrees forward, that’s about 27 pounds; at 30 degrees, it’s 40 pounds; at 45 degrees, it’s 49 pounds; and at 60 degrees, it’s 60 pounds of stress.

Not only can that cause a literal pain in your neck, but it also puts stress on your muscles, tendons, and ligaments, writes study author Kenneth K. Hansraj, M.D., chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine.
But as scary as this image is, we know you won’t be throwing out your phone, tablet, or e-reader anytime soon. That’s fine, just be sure to use it with proper posture, which means your ears are aligned with your shoulders and your shoulder blades are back in the neutral position. Yes, this means putting your phone pretty much directly in front of your face, but at least you won’t be dealing with a seriously stiff neck 20 years from now.

I wish I could say that I didn’t know anyone who had been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused. Sadly that is not the case. The statistics are alarming.
1 in 4 are affected. And when you know someone personally, the statistics become very real. One of my brave friends from high school came forward. She and too many other women to count, came forward with charges of sexual assault by Bob Hewitt. Hewitt, a former Grand Slam doubles tennis champion, was convicted on Monday March 23, 2015 in a South African court of rape and sexual assault decades after the alleged assaults.
Last week I listened to a compelling presentation by Kathleen Lynch, Mary Kay consultant in Methuen, Ma. She shared this video about what the Mary Kay Foundation is doing to bring awareness and help for survivors.
“Mary Kay Ash established the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation in 1996 to raise funds for research into cancers that affected women. Four years later, the foundation added a second goal: to help eliminate violence against women. Since that time, over 54 million dollars have been distributed in support of these causes.
In 2012, the foundation (now called The Mary Kay Foundation) teamed up with Love is Respect, a 24-hour resource designed for teens and young adults. People with questions or concerns about relationships can text loveis to 22522 and get support. For more information, one can go to marykay.com/dontlookaway. There are some powerful videos available for viewing.”
Love does not hurt.
